Looks like Punxsutawney Phil predicted correctly. It’s still a winter wonderland up here in Lake Placid: we just got five feet of snow! There’s still time to enjoy the Adirondacks’ wonderful winter activities.
While we love skiing, snowshoeing and ice skating, I encourage everyone to try one of our more unusual upstate traditions: ice fishing! The myriad waterways of the Adirondacks offer trout, northern pike, yellow perch, walleye, salmon and more. Not a bad bounty!
And if you’re craving socially distant connection, ice fishing is a fast way to bonding. There’s always a strong camaraderie amongst the neighbourhoods of shanties and tents dotted along our frozen lakes, rivers and ponds.
Don’t be discouraged if you’re not a seasoned winter angler. Up here we have several guiding services: Matthew Burnett Guiding, Upstate Guide Service and Nessmuk’s Wilderness Guide Services to name a few.
Lake Colby is one of the most popular spots in this neck of the Adirondacks. The clover-shaped lake is home to landlocked salmon, brown and rainbow trout. Under normal circumstances, it’s also host to an annual ice fishing derby in March.
Lake Champlain’s 120-mile expanse is a fishing favorite throughout the year. Check out Port Henry and Willsboro Bay, where you’ll be able to rent ice shanties and other supplies. Even the journey there is scenic, as you wind through the High Peaks en route.
Closer to home, Connery Pond is Lake Placid’s very own ice fishing spot. You’ll be able to catch splake, sunfish and pumpkinseed here while you take in the glorious views of Whiteface Mountain.
So what are you waiting for?! Book GO-Cottage this March and get in on the last of the ice fishing fun this season.
