Ironman History
In September of 1974 the start of modern triathlon in the United States was marked. The single-day endurance event known as Ironman started as a spring-run swim event. Judy and John Collings organized a spring run-swim competition in Honolulu which helped plant the seed to put on a triathlon event the following year. Moreover, their goal was to create something an endurance focused event for athletes, those who focused on running and swimming.
In 1977, John thought of using a local bicycling club route and John famously added “…whoever finishes first we’ll call him the Iron Man.” In 1980 founders John and Judy Collins give ABC’s “Wide World of Sports” permission to film the event, bringing worldwide attention to the Ironman.
