We love home projects and are getting ready for a busy summer at GO-Cottage! It’s been close to 15 years since we had done any updates on the garage.
All the paint on the windows, doors and garage door was totally worn away by rain, snow and other weather. The North Country only has about three to four months of growing season. The rest of the year, the weather really does a number on standing structures.
So I decided it was time to get out my handy electric hand sanders and get to work!
Machine sanding is a bit easier than sanding by hand as you get it all in one go. Plus, it’s a great core and upper body workout. It took about three hours to get all the flaking paint off the window sills and doors. Be sure to do this when it’s a nice sunny day so that the wood dries well before you paint it.
Once the sanding is done and you’ve brushed off all the excess and residue, then it’s time for primer. I love Zinsser Mold Killing Primer. This stuff is amazing and seals your work fast! I think it dried in about 10-15 minutes.
After it’s completely dry, it’s time for your top coat of Super White Semi-Gloss by Benjamin Moore (definitely my preferred brand).
The garage was originally a sold stone, cider block structure. What a difference it is now!
All in all a good days work! The whole restoration took about six hours, give or take a break or two. But wow! How much fun to have a brand spanking, sparkling new garage!!
