GO-Cottage sits on a long, lean private piece of land with two California style Bungalow Cottages that were built in 1924. We fully restored and updated both Cottages with a modern 1920s vibe: open, bright, clean and spacious.
The larger cottage is a Two-Bedroom and about 1000 square feet. The smaller Studio Cottage sits about 15 feet behind it and is 400 square feet. They are completely separate and private. Since the front and back cottage share the fully fenced-in yard, I have always wanted to give the Studio even more privacy. So I decided it was time to build a trellis in between them!
If you’re interested in having a trellis on your property, the first thing to do is figure out whether to buy your trellis or build one. After a few months of research, the answer was clear to me: we needed to build one. As with every new design, size and positioning is super important. You have to cement in the posts, and after that there is no turning back!
I started by researching on Google Images what would be close to what I imagined. Here’s one that stood out for me: two posts, square-shaped lattice and a nice decorative top.
But there are so many possibilities to choose! Diamond-shaped lattices are another popular option. Stones around the bottom are also really pleasing and abundant in the Adirondacks.
Once we finalized a design we began the building process. It took about three days from start to finish. First, we drew out a design. Next, we bought the wood from our neighborhood supply store, carted it all to GO-Cottage and dug some holes. Then came the cement. Once again, be sure you know exactly where you the trellis because cement is forever.
Next, we screwed in the horizontal top and bottom pieces to structure it.
After that, we added in the square lattice strips. You can buy these fully made.
And finally, it was time for the ivy. As this build was during the fall, there was no time to plant – so I found some amazing ivy on the internet. It looks so real!!
