It’s that time of year again! I love decorating our cottage for Christmas.
To set the scene, I make our front porch Christmas-ready with a festive, less-is-more approach. We already have two sconces that light the snow beautifully. We also planted two cute little Christmas trees on the porch several years ago.
One of the main attractions is the wreath. I love the thrill of creating our own wreath with materials that are natural to our property – we used fallen pine needles and pine cones from the trees in our yard for the one we have now. Martha Stewart has good instructions for a DIY wreath. We like to add some bright Christmas lights, ribbon, and tinsel to ours. Simple but bright and sparkly! The possibilities for wreaths are endless though.
And of course, the cottage wouldn’t be complete this season without our Christmas tree. I call it instant Christmas: we bought a beautiful pre-made tree several years ago, which can be left decorated and kept safe in a dry place for the rest of the year. Then when it’s time to bring it out again, it takes 5 minutes! It’s a wonderful way to have the ambiance of Christmas around you, especially for a couple or for people who travel.
For our insta-tree, I love silver decorations. They give a beautiful, bright, warm vibe. We go for anything shiny! Sometimes I’ll add blue or red, but other times I like to keep it all silver. Our ornaments range from stars, to musical instruments, to cute little Santas and elves. Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware are great places to find decorations.
I’ll also add a few little red and white striped candy canes. They’re fun and tasty! Underneath the tree we have a fluffy, sparkly white felt skirt.
All it takes are a few key decorations to get your home in the holiday spirit! Thanks for reading and wishing you a very Merry Christmas!
