With fall approaching, it’s the perfect time of year to take a little vacation with your pup! The weather is still beautiful but temperatures are cooler so your dog will be much more comfortable.
Sometimes it can be a bit tricky to plan vacation activities you can enjoy with your dog. But we’ve got you covered! We love bringing our dog Lulu to Lake Placid. Without further ado, here are some dog-friendly activities for your next Adirondack getaway:
Go for a hike! Lake Placid alone has so many great trails to choose from. Some of our favorites are Henry’s Woods and Heaven Hill. They’re peaceful, the air is fresh, and occasionally you run into fellow dog-owners. Then it’s a giant dog party! Most of the people and dogs are very friendly, but it’s best to leash your dog. However, if they are familiar with the trails and trustworthy enough, you can let them run off-leash.
Check out John Brown Farm too! It’s the historical home of the eponymous abolitionist, set high in the Adirondack mountains. Along with touring his Civil War-era house, there are some wonderful dog-friendly hiking trails to explore on the property.
If you want a really spectacular Adirondack view, take a drive with your pup on the Whiteface Veterans’ Memorial Highway. The highway takes you to the top New York’s fifth highest peak, and you can reach the very summit by hiking the Alpine Nature Trail.
A trip to the Adirondacks wouldn’t be complete without a little paddling. Located on Paradox Bay, which flows into Lake Placid, East Lake, and West Lake, Captain Marney’s Boat Rental is a favorite amongst Lake Placid visitors. This pet-friendly boat rental was even named after the founder’s dog Marney thirty years ago! They offer kayaks, canoes, engine-powered boats, and water sports.
Finally, an important part of any vacation is the food! Finding a restaurant that you can bring your dog to can be challenging. But Lisa G’s is a Lake Placid institution and famously welcoming to dogs. Their generous menu has something for everyone with modern versions of comfort food. And their spacious covered porch area is still open.
If you’re craving some craft brews with your meal, the Great Adirondack Brewing Company is another great option when you’re with your dog. Their location on Main Street makes for a fun atmosphere and they specialise in hearty classics like seafood, steaks, and slow roasted prime rib.
