I love the huge boulder we have in the front yard. It’s one of my favorite vocal points when you drive up to the Cottage.
It makes a cool statement and plays on the Adirondack‘s geological origins.
The Adirondacks take up 6.1 million acres of upstate New York, forming a dome of peaks rather than a single mountain range.
The mountains themselves are made up of metamorphic rocks that surround a core of igneous rocks. The rocks are part of the Canadian Shield that is 880 million to 1 billion years old!
Another distinctive aspect of the region is that it was originally covered by the Laurentian Glacier. When it eroded, it produced over 1300 lakes and ponds. Like Lake Champlain!
We’re lucky to have a little piece of Adirondacks history in our own yard!
